Understanding Hair Loss During Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatments like Chemotherapy, Cranial Radiotherapy, and Anti-Estrogen Drugs can lead to hair loss as they target cancer cells, inadvertently affecting hair follicles. This can result in partial or complete hair loss. Your oncology team can provide insight into how your treatment may impact your hair.

At Restore Hair Loss and Scalp Clinic, we offer support and solutions for managing hair loss during your cancer journey.

Understanding Hair Loss During Cancer Treatment

Following the initiation of chemotherapy, individuals typically experience hair loss within 10 to 15 days. This form of hair loss is transient, with regrowth occurring approximately 3 to 4 months after the completion of treatment. Newly grown hair may exhibit variations such as a softer texture akin to baby hair, potential differences in curl pattern, and color. Additionally, sensitivity and dryness of the scalp leading to itchiness are common occurrences during this phase.

Effects of Cranial Radiotherapy

Cranial radiotherapy can result in partial hair loss in specific targeted areas. Typically, hair loss is more pronounced at the site where radiation is administered, with less impact observed at the exit point. Hair regeneration usually begins in a sporadic manner and may take 6 to 12 months to fully restore. Depending on the intensity and duration of the treatment, complete regrowth may not always be achievable, particularly at the entry point of radiation.

Impact of Anti-Estrogen Drugs

Individuals with estrogen-positive hormonal receptors may be prescribed anti-estrogen medications for up to 5 years as part of their treatment regimen. Thinning hair is a common side effect associated with these drugs, indicative of hormonal-related hair loss. Upon cessation of medication, hair may gradually return to its pre-treatment state. However, those with a genetic predisposition to androgenetic alopecia may experience thinning in the frontal hairline and crown area as a result of these medications.
